The Explorer Section

Explorer Blog

At the moment this section caters for children from 10 – 12 years of age or who are in 4th to 6th class. We meet on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 8.00 to 9.15. During our weekly meetings we play games and we do a variety of different Scouting activities.

Apart from our weekly meetings we also do lots of different activities at the weekends. We also try to do one long camp during the summer each year as well this is called annual camp.

So that is who we are and what we do, if you are interested in joining up please go to our contacts page At the moment there are no spaces left in Tuesday night Explorers but please check back regularly as this could change.

Tuesday Explorers

Hi my name is Emma and I am currently one of the Tuesday night Explorer Leaders. We get up to lots of fun stuff on Tuesday nights. Our patrol work could include anything from how to pitch a tent to doing a treasure hunt to building a table from nothing but wooden poles and rope. For patrol work we work in small groups or patrols and at the moment we have three patrols; the Caterpillars, the Penguins and the Pandas. Each patrol has a patrol leader, this is a scout who is in charge of that patrol. The patrol leaders or PL’s meet up once a month to discuss the programme, they tell the leaders what sort of things they want to do in the weekly meetings and what sort of activities they want to plan.

Outside our weekly meetings we also do lots of other things. For this year we plan to go camping, hiking, hostelling, rock climbing, swimming, orienteering and much much more. Then once a year we also go on a longer camp which is called annual camp. This camp usually last about five days and is always a lot of fun. On annual camp we try to do a few different activities, and the scouts also get a chance to try out all of the skills that they have learnt during the year. This year for annual camp we are going to go to Fota campsite in County Cork, we can’t wait!

Here are a few helpful documents that we use alot:

Wednesday Explorers

My name is Aoife and I am one of the leaders in Wednesday Explorers. The other two leaders are Paul and Will. We cover a variety of different things in our weekly meetings including first aid, pioneering, communication, backwoods and orienteering. We do our weekly work in groups called Patrols. We have 4 patrols at the moment and each patol has a patrol leader in charge. The patrol leader is one of the scouts who would generally be older than the others and have more experience. They would help to teach the less experienced or new scouts the skills to do our activities. There is also an assistant patrol leader who helps the patrol leader and takes over from them if they are not there.

Some weekends we do activites ranging from hikes to hostel weekends or camping. The scouts use these activities to apply the skills they learn in the weekly meetings. We also participate in activities with other scouts in our county. To finish the year we go on a camp for a few days called annual camp. This would normally be further away than weekend activities and this year we are going to Tollymore Forest park in Newcastle Co.Down. We will be doing a lot of fun activities up there and are all looking forward to it.

Explorer Calendar

Here is a calendar of what we have planned for our weekly meetings and what activities we will be doing, to find out more about a weekly meeting or an activity just click on it. *Tuesday activities are shown in orange and Wednesday activities in blue.

Cylcle Hike

The Cycle Hike last weekend was brilliant I hope all of the Explorers that came with us agree. Although by the time I got home I was certainly very tired! We cycled from the top of Mt. Merrion Ave to Cabinteely park where we had obstacle course races and lots of fun on the Spider Web. Then we cycled back again.

We started off at 12 0 Clock, first things first we checked that all of the bikes were ok, all helmets were on and all of the scouts had everything that they needed. Then we got going, we got off to a very good start although it was up hill most of the way (but not very steep :~). We stopped for a break after a bit, to let people take off a layer or two and get a drink.

We were all a bit confused as to where the awful rain that had been forecast was, but we decided to settle for glorious sunshine with a little bit of wind.

We got to Cabinteely park in only 50 minutes and everyone was ready for a break and something to eat at that point! Then after a short rest we went to have some fun in the playground. One scout managed to do the obstacle course in record time of just over 2 minutes including the monkey bars.

Then unfortunately it was time to get back on our bikes and head back again, we were taking a different route beck to meet the parents so this made it more interesting. Some of the hills were tough but everyone made it and all of the bikes survived although it was touch and go with a particular flat tire for a while there. We then stopped in another playground out our way back because we were making such good time that had we not we would have been back way too early.

Overall an excellent day was had by all! If you want to see more photos of this activity go to Cycle Hike Photos.

Bray Head Hike

On Sunday Wednesday Explorers went on a hike up Bray Head. We had a great time even if it was a bit mucky. Bruce, our scout dog, decided to go on a wander on his own when we were walking along the beach. Will had to run afer him to get him back. Climbing up the rocks to the cross was fun but we had to come down the path as climbing down was too dangerous. Some of the scouts got yards of slush on the way back to the train, a super sugary drink that wasnt very nice!!

Hostel Weekend

Jan 29/30/31

Hi all,

we are just back from our hostel weekend in Glendale lodge, we had a brilliant weekend. Hopefully some of the pl’s will post as well to tell you more about it.

We arrived down on Friday night, then on Saturday we went for a hike to the top of Prince Williams Seat, this was lots of fun although some people got very very wet and muddy.

Then on Sunday morning it snowed and we all had some fun in the snow.

All in all a good weekend was had!
